For distances of 5 kilometres or less, taking the bike has been proven to be the quickest and most flexible means of transport. In the long run, by strategically furthering cycling traffic, Norderstedt wants to become a “bicycle friendly” community and raise the percentage of bikes in the modal share from 19 per cent to 22 per cent. An important element in realising this plan is the bicycle hire system, which the city has introduced as another means of public transport.

There are many good arguments for riding a bike.

Cyclists live healthier

Cycling is good for your health. Cyclists suffer less from stress, because they don’t have to wait in traffic jams and don’t need to find a parking space. In addition, they remain fit and burn more calories than car drivers. Click here for more information on a study regarding cycling.

Easy changing

All stations of the municipal railway lines (U and AKN) are equipped with bike stands. Some of the central bus stops are also equipped with bike stands. In general, bikes can be parked sheltered and in direct proximity to the station. With the exception of rush hour times (6 am – 9 am and 4 pm – 6 pm), you can also take your bike with you on the municipal U/AKN railway lines. This service is free of charge.

Environmentally friendly and quiet

Taking the bike is environmentally friendly and quiet, which substantially contributes to improving the traffic situation in Norderstedt.

Good infrastructure

Norderstedt is gradually expanding its cycling path network. In addition to signposted routes for leisure cyclists, Norderstedt has more than 100 bike stands dotted across the city.
