Pedestrian traffic

Walking is the natural form of movement. It enables all people of all ages to get around and to actively take part in city life. Pedestrian traffic creates an urban sense of life, because much of city life takes place on foot paths, squares and green spaces.

With 16 per cent, the proportion of pedestrian traffic is comparatively low in Norderstedt. The German average lies at 23 per cent (MID 2008). Nonetheless, Norderstedt is very pedestrian friendly – it offers paths through green spaces, many zebra crossings and a number pedestrian lights. Not to mention the themed round trails that lead through special natural environments, past moors and wetlands, across meadows and through old forests.

To increase the percentage of pedestrian traffic, the city council has commissioned a pedestrian traffic concept. This primarily focuses on improving the network of footpaths.
